Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,
What a return from spring break! Many of our students headed outside and put their building skills to work. Many snowmen, snow boulders and other creations were constructed last week. With double digits ahead this week, these activities will likely be replaced by puddles and mud. Packing an extra set of socks and pants in your child’s backpack this week might be an excellent idea.
As we enter April, students will be participating in many off-site and in-class experiences. Thank you parents, for your continued support of these rich learning experiences.
Solar Eclipse
As a precaution for this event, students will stay indoors between 11:50am – 1:50pm on Monday, April 8th. This means students will have the opportunity to go outside for morning recess from 10:15-10:30 am but then will be required to stay indoors during our lunch recess from 11:50 – 12:15. If you choose to have your child walk home for lunch this day, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her from damage by the solar eclipse. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us at the school. You can also access additional information on our website regarding this unique event.
Literacy Survey
Thank you to all of our Grade 1, 2 and 3 parents that have already completed our literacy survey. We appreciate your responses and your feedback. For those families that have not yet had a chance to respond, you have one final opportunity before we close this survey on Wednesday, April 10. Thank you so much for your feedback on this important topic.
Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test Update
Alberta Education has announced that Grade 6 English Language Arts and Literature and Mathematics provincial achievement tests will not be administered in the 2023-24 school year. Social Studies and Science provincial achievement tests will still be administered in the 2023-24 school year.
Paddington’s Postcards
In our Grade 3 classroom (Room 12), we were recently learning about the rights of children in Social Studies. During our learning, we were introduced to an organization called UNICEF. UNICEF works hard to help children in different countries have their rights met. While we were doing some research, we learned about a program that UNICEF offers called, “Paddington’s Postcards”. We were very interested in this program because we have been reading the book, “A Bear Called Paddington” and we have our very own Paddington Bear travelling around our Grade 3 student community.
In order to participate in Paddington’s Postcards, we need to donate at least $20 per month which makes a total of $240. As a class we were excited to learn that there is an incredible organization like this that helps children in need. We wanted to be able to participate in this unique opportunity and help children who need it. Some students from our classroom took the initiative to write persuasive letters to Mr. Hutton to help convince him that we should be able to donate money to Paddington’s Postcards. He approved this learning opportunity and then gave us the idea of a Toonie Drive.
A Toonie Drive is where students bring in a Toonie for donation. Each classroom has received a red “Paddington Bear Top Hat “for our Toonie collections. We are hopeful that all students will help us out by bringing in a small money donation. Our Toonie Drive is going to begin on Tuesday, April 9th and run until April 12th. If your child is able to participate in the Toonie Drive it would be greatly appreciated!
Spring Flower and Plant Fundraiser
Happy Spring from Parent Association! We are doing a spring flower fundraiser with all proceeds going towards science and robotics materials for our students. Get into gardening with your kids and choose from strawberry baskets, veggie and herb packs or order some lovely flower baskets for the special moms and grandmas in your life. Plants will be delivered to the school just before Mother's Day. For more information about this event, please check out the link below:
