Dear Andrew Sibbald Families,

Welcome February! We hope you were able to stay warm this weekend. We will certainly keep an eye on the temperature throughout the week and follow CBE’s guidelines around cold weather recommendations. We recognize the value of outdoor play during recess and lunch during the school day. When temperatures reach -20 C or colder, including the wind-chill factor, students stay inside, and AMA Patrols don’t monitor the crosswalks. Parents, thank you for your continued diligence in ensuring your children come to school with the proper gear to be safe in cold temperatures. If you ever need anything (boots, snow pants etc.) please do let our office know. We are happy to help.

SDP (School Development Plan) Spotlight

Last Friday, our teachers and support staff engaged in professional learning around many topics including Procedural Fluency in Mathematics. When students have strong procedural fluency, their mental math confidence, accuracy, and flexibility allow them to problem solve with efficiency. See some great examples of mathematics learning in Kindergarten & Grade One. One of our SDP goals this year is to help students improve their procedural fluency through games, fact practice and other routines such as, “number talks.”

Stay tuned for more information around how our School Council members are organizing a lending library of fun games for families!

Sibbald Welcomes Storyteller - Jeff Stockton – This week

This Wednesday and Thursday we get to host storyteller and performer, Jeff Stockton. We look forward to this experience for our students! Jeff is a master storyteller and author, and we are lucky to have him at Sibbald.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate the themes of belonging and friendship at school. Teachers will be setting aside a few minutes at the end of the day on February 12th (February 11th for our Tues/Thurs Kinders) so students can distribute Valentine cards to their classmates. A few requests from the teachers – labelling the cards with your child’s name and “friend” is helpful in the younger grades. Second, please ensure that your child has a card for everyone in the class, if they would like to share (there is no obligation to!) Please know that there won’t be any class parties or food sharing of any kind. Kindly keep special treats for home time. Thank you!
