Grade Configuration Changes at Andrew Sibbald School and Nickle School

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We would like to inform you that due to continued growth in Calgary, there is a need to balance enrolment between Calgary Board of Education (CBE) schools. For this reason, there will be changes to Andrew Sibbald and Nickle Schools.

Grade Configuration Changes at Andrew Sibbald School:

  • Andrew Sibbald School will change from a kindergarten to Grade 6 to a kindergarten to Grade 5 configuration in the 2024-25 school year.
  • This means that current Grade 5 and 6 students will leave Andrew Sibbald School at the end of the current school year. Those students will attend Nickle School for the 2024-25 school year for Grade 6 and Grade 7.

Grade Configuration Changes at Nickle School:

  • Nickle School will change from a Grade 7 to 9 to a Grade 6 to 9 configuration in the 2024-25 school year.

Why is this change happening?

The CBE is experiencing record enrolment growth in many areas across the city. As the southeast communities continue to grow and develop, the schools in these areas are unable to accommodate all the students living within their designated school boundaries.

Starting immediately, Lakeshore School in Auburn Bay will begin overflowing new students in Grades 7 to 9 to Nickle School. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, Grade 6 to 9 students from Auburn Bay and Mahogany that cannot be accommodated at Lakeshore School will be overflowed to Nickle School.

A grade configuration change at Andrew Sibbald School and Nickle School will allow for cohort groups of students to remain together and provide better program continuity. Additionally, this change will align the grade configurations of CBE schools in the area and create more space to accommodate projected growth in Calgary’s southeast.

How do I register for school next year?

Kindergarten registrations for the 2024-25 school year begin on Jan. 15, 2024. For more information on how to register, please visit our website

How will students get to school?

Students are eligible for transportation to their designated or overflow school if they live beyond the walk zone. Families must visit Busing & Transportation for important information on transportation services. Families must register for transportation if they want to use the service using MyCBE.

In the CBE and across the city, we are experiencing a school bus driver shortage that may impact the mode of service provided. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible and working with our partners to restore reliability to transportation services.

What if I have more questions?

If you still have questions or require additional information, please contact the Area 6 office at Area6@cbe.ab.ca or 403-777-8789 (extension 0).
